Brass Dent Removal and Trombone Slide Repair: What Actually Happens, and What Ruins an Instrument

“Just push the dent out” is not how professional dent removal works, and the difference matters. Brass work-hardens as it's bent or struck — the more it's flexed, the more brittle and rigid it becomes — so the actual goal is controlled reshaping that restores the original bore geometry without overworking the metal. Rushed or forceful attempts routinely leave a dent that's technically gone but a bore that's permanently distorted.

How Technicians Actually Remove Dents

The two core techniques both work the brass between an inside support and an outside tool, minimizing how much the metal actually stretches. In burnishing, the technician supports the tubing from inside with a bell iron, tapered mandrel, or a ball on a rod or cable, then works the brass smooth from outside using burnishers, rollers, or a dent hammer — often in several light passes rather than one forceful one. Planishing follows a similar logic for damage near tight curves and branches: a ball on a rod supports the inside wall while the technician taps the outside with many light hammer blows, gradually restoring the round profile rather than forcing it back in one motion.

For dents in hard-to-reach areas — deep in a tuba's bows, or a French horn's wrap — many shops now use magnetic dent removal systems: a steel ball travels inside the tube while a powerful external magnet drags it back and forth over the dent, avoiding the awkward disassembly that older rod-and-ball methods sometimes required in tight spaces.

Tool and force choice matters enormously here. Too large a ball, too much force, or hammering against a ball that isn't moving can all push the dent past “flat” into a bulge — which cannot be fully reversed. This is exactly why competent dent removal is a controlled, iterative process rather than a single forceful correction.

Which Dents Actually Matter

Dent severity isn't really about size — it's about location relative to moving parts and tight tolerances. Dents in tuning-slide tubing, valve knuckles, and valve-section tubing interfere with fit and airflow in ways that broad, shallow dents on a bell or bow generally don't.

Trombone hand-slides are a special case. The slide tubes are unusually hard and springy compared to the rest of the instrument, which makes dent removal there more difficult, not less — and even tiny irregularities that wouldn't matter elsewhere can keep a slide from moving perfectly. Some shops specifically offer “slide optimization” as a distinct service from general dent removal for exactly this reason: it's less about erasing a visible dent and more about restoring smooth, even slide action.

What Goes Wrong With Amateur Attempts

  • Over-stretching. Extra space between tools, or too much force, stretches the tube — producing a bulge or flat spot that can't be fully undone, and increases the local bore diameter right where it matters acoustically.
  • Work-hardening and cracking risk. The more the brass is bent back and forth, the more brittle it becomes; overworked metal is more likely to crack under further stress.
  • Dirt telegraphing through. Hard grime built up inside a neglected bore can show through the exterior surface during dent work if the instrument isn't cleaned first — one more reason dent removal and cleaning are often bundled together.
  • Finish damage. Magnets used without a protective barrier, or tools used without proper lubrication, can scratch lacquer or plating even when the dent work itself goes fine.

A related, separate red flag: incomplete dent work that gets hidden with heavy filing, sanding, or polishing afterward rather than actually corrected. That approach can mask a visible problem while leaving the underlying deformation — and it removes metal from the surface in the process, which is its own form of damage on top of the original dent.

What It Costs

Very few shops publish a simple “small dent / big dent” price list — dent work is usually priced by labor time, by whether it's bundled with alignment service, or after a physical inspection. Where shops do publish package pricing, the spread between “minor” and “major” work is substantial:

The honest takeaway: location and accessibility drive price more than the dent's size. A small, easy-to-reach bell ding can be a minimum-charge job; a crease near a valve knuckle, a damaged trombone slide, or anything on a large tuba can climb into several hundred dollars once disassembly and careful, iterative work are factored in. These figures are illustrative — actual pricing depends on the shop, the region, and the instrument's condition, and a written estimate after inspection is the only real answer.

What a Good Shop Tells You

A solid intake process looks roughly like this: the shop inspects the instrument, explains what it actually found, recommends specific repair options, gives an estimated cost, and discusses realistic turnaround before starting. If a shop can't tell you whether your repair is routine, intermediate, or the kind of job that needs specialist reconstruction — or won't say what happens if they find something worse once it's opened up — that's a sign to ask more questions before committing the instrument.
